5G is the fifth generation of cellular networks. 5 = Fifth - G = Generation = 5G

(mobile phone connections / internet)

5G is not to be confused with 2.4GHz & 5GHz that you will see on your home Wi-Fi router. This is referring to 2.4Ghz & 5GHz frequency for your home wireless network.

The two big differences between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies are speed and range. 2.4GHz provides internet to a larger area but sacrifices speed. 5GHz provides faster speeds to a smaller area.

Many devices only use the 2.4GHz frequency, and these devices are all attempting to use the same “radio space” which can cause overcrowding of the channels. The 5GHz band has 23 available channels for devices to use vs the 3 available on the 2.4GHz band.

Overcrowding and interference can cause slower speeds and intermtent connectivy issues. Some examples of devices that can cause interference:

- Microwaves

- Cordless phones

- Baby monitors

- Garage door openers

Which should you choose, 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

2.4GHz is more stable and more reliable at longer distances and through walls

5GHz is faster at shorter distances

If faster speeds are most important to you, 5GHz is usually the better choice.

If the wireless range is more important to you, 2.4 GHz is usually the better choice.

If you have a lot of devices that use 2.4 GHz and you are experiencing interference or intermtent connectivy issues, then 5 GHz is probably a better option.

To check or connect to the alternate frequency,

Open your WiFi connection on your phone or computer, you will see your Wi-Fi network. You might see your network name showing both 2.4 or 5g. To connect to the alternate frequency click your choice and click connect, then enter your WiFi password.

Normally 2.4 & 5 ghz use the same password.

If you do not know your Wi-Fi password check our earlier post for assistance.
